Sidewalk

*service design

Team: Ben Butler (ST), Patrick Nguyen (XD), Jo Rozycki (ST), Maryn Tan (XD)

Background

Since 2020, anti-Asian hate crimes have increased 339% nationwide. Many of these crimes were perpetrated by strangers while the victims were walking alone in large cities.

The Ask

Design a NY-based service that keeps vunerable people on-foot safe.

Problem

Most services currently available are reactionary, not preventative - meaning they only help users during or after an attack, rather than reducing the likelihood of attack to begin with.

Our Thinking

Truth

Minorities, women, people with disabilities, and newcomers to cities are more likely to be targets of harassment, assault, or burglary.

Ultimately, anyone who is perceived as vunerable is more likely to become a victim to acts of stranger violence.

Insight

The simplest way to decrease a walker’s perceived vulnerability is for them to walk with others.
